Scented Candles
In this section, you'll find answers to the most frequently asked questions about how to use, maintain, and get the most out of your scented candles.
How do you use a scented candle?
A scented candle performs best when used with care and attention:
Make sure the candle is at room temperature before lighting.
Allow the top layer of wax to fully melt during the first burn. This prevents tunneling, where only the center melts and the sides remain untouched.
For optimal fragrance diffusion and a clean, steady flame, it's important to maintain the wick properly. Trim the wick to about 0.5 cm before each burn. This helps prevent smoking, soot buildup, or blackened glass, and keeps the flame calm and stable. Ideally, use a Wick Trimmer, which is specially designed to trim wicks — even at the bottom of the jar.
Using a WoodWick candle? Gently snap off the burnt pieces of the wooden wick with a dry paper towel. Be sure the wick has cooled down completely to avoid injury.
Do not burn your candle for more than 3 to 4 hours at a time. Longer burn times can cause the wick to become too long, which may result in overheating and soot.
Place the candle in a draft-free spot on a heat-resistant surface. This ensures an even burn and the best possible flame.
Never move a burning candle. Wait until the wax has completely solidified before handling.
Once you’ve extinguished the flame, we recommend leaving the lid off — that way, you can continue to enjoy the fragrance in the room.
Important: Never burn a candle all the way down. Always leave at least 1 cm of wax at the bottom to prevent the glass from breaking.
Why is my scented candle producing soot and turning the glass black?
Our soy-based scented candles are known for their clean burn, but if you notice soot or smoke, here are a few things to check:
Check the wick length. Let the wax solidify and allow the wick to cool.
• For a wooden wick: gently break off the burnt part until it no longer crumbles.
• For a cotton wick: trim it to about 0.5 cm.Keep the candle out of drafts. A flickering flame can lead to soot production.
Don’t burn the candle for too long. After 1 to 2 hours, the wax surface is usually fully melted. Avoid burning it for more than 4 hours to prevent the wick from getting too long and producing soot.
My candle isn't burning properly or is tunneling – what should I do?
Tunneling is a common issue where the wax burns down the middle while the edges remain unmelted. Here’s how to fix it:
Let the candle burn long enough. Especially during the first use, allow it to burn for at least 1 to 2 hours so the entire surface melts evenly.
Already experiencing tunneling? You can carefully remove some wax around the wick or wrap aluminum foil around the top edge of the jar, leaving an opening above the flame. This helps redirect heat to the sides and evens out the wax pool.
There are air bubbles in my candle
These bubbles do not affect the fragrance, burn quality, or safety of the candle.
Candles are filled based on weight, not volume — so even if you see bubbles, the candle contains exactly the same amount of wax as a smooth one.
Are scented candles bad for your health?
They comply with all relevant European safety regulations.
The fragrances used are approved for household use, and the wax is a carefully formulated blend of soy wax and a small amount of paraffin, which ensures a stable and clean burn.
How can you reuse your scented candle?
The world is becoming increasingly focused on sustainability, recycling, and taking care of the environment — and rightly so! It's essential for the future of our planet. That’s why we fully support reusing, recycling, or upcycling wherever possible.
Our empty candle jars from WoodWick and Yankee Candle don’t just look beautiful — they deserve a second life. While it may seem logical to throw the glass in the bottle bank, many municipalities don’t allow this because candle jars often have a different glass composition than packaging glass. That’s why we recommend reusing the jars or, if not, disposing of them with your regular waste.
But let’s be honest — reusing is much more fun! Here are a few tips to clean your jar and give it a second life:
How to clean out your candle jar:
Pour boiling hot water into the jar, all the way to the top.
Over time, the leftover wax will float to the surface and harden.
Once cooled, pour out the water and break the wax into small pieces — you can even reuse these in a wax melt burner!
Remove the wick base and clean the inside with warm water and a cloth.
Optionally, peel off the label on the outside.
⚠️ Important: Never pour wax down the sink — it can clog your drain

What’s the difference between a wooden and a cotton wick?
Wooden wicks (like those in WoodWick candles) produce a gentle crackling sound as they burn, adding extra ambiance. In Ellipse candles, they also create a wide, horizontal flame. They require a bit more attention when lighting and should be gently trimmed or snapped off before each use.
Cotton wicks (as used in Yankee Candle and Chesapeake Bay Candle) are the classic type. They burn with a narrower, pointed flame and should be trimmed regularly to prevent "mushrooming" — the buildup of a small carbon ball on the wick.
Both types are safe and effective when used properly. Ultimately, the choice comes down to personal preference and the atmosphere you want to create.

Reed Diffusers
In this section, you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions about how reed diffusers work, how long they last, and how to get the most out of them.
How do reed diffusers work?
Reed diffusers consist of a bottle filled with fragrance oil and several wooden reeds. The reeds slowly absorb the oil and release the scent into the air through natural evaporation. The more reeds you use, the stronger the fragrance will be.
Reed diffusers are ideal for continuous, low-maintenance scent in any room — no flame or electricity needed. Want a subtler scent? Simply use fewer reeds or flip them less often. For a more intense fragrance, turn the reeds every few days to refresh the scent.
Why choose reed diffusers?
Reed diffusers offer a consistent and effortless way to keep your home smelling fresh:
They provide continuous fragrance without needing any attention
No flame, electricity, or heat required — making them safe and low-maintenance
A stylish addition to any interior, available in various designs and scents
Ideal for small to medium-sized spaces like hallways, bedrooms, or bathrooms
Perfect for people who want long-lasting fragrance without having to light a candle
Whether you’re looking to welcome guests with a fresh hallway scent or create a calming atmosphere in your bedroom, reed diffusers are an elegant and practical choice.
Why can’t I smell my reed diffuser anymore?
Can I use reeds from another brand?
We don’t recommend it. Each brand carefully matches the composition of the fragrance oil with the specific type of reeds provided. The thickness, material, and absorption capacity of the reeds directly affect how well — and how long — the fragrance is diffused.
Using reeds from a different brand may result in weaker scent throw, faster evaporation, or barely noticeable fragrance. For the best results, we always recommend using the original refill and the matching reeds from the same brand.
How long do reed diffusers last?
A 100 ml diffuser typically lasts around 8 to 12 weeks, while a 250 ml diffuser can provide fragrance for up to 5 to 6 months.
